Today is Blog Action Day, wherein “bloggers from different countries, interests and languages blog about one important global topic on the same day.” Past years’ topics include environment, hunger, food.
This year, it’s “The Power of We.” What’s that? Well, it’s really up to the blogger to connect their message on Blog Action Day with that theme. I choose to connect with LGBT History Month, happening now, in October.
LGBT History Month has been marked for almost 20 years. It’s has a strong presence in the U.S. and in the U.K., and its importance grows with time. The commitment is to awareness, understanding, and acceptance. Very simply, LGBT History Month is about people working together to carve out a space for themselves in the world.
Here’s what’s of primary interest to me, as a historian: People working together across distance and across time is admirable and very … human. When people demonstrate their place in history—their participation in history—it adds an important dimension to the work they are doing.
