Picture this!

My Wells Fargo® Credit Card doesn’t look like any other credit card in the world!

Want to know why? I used the newest Wells Fargo feature called the Wells Fargo Card Design StudioSM service to put a picture of my daughter on my credit card. Now, every time I take out my card to use it, it’s an excuse to show the world my personalized card and brag about my daughter a little bit. I liked it so much I added a picture to my Wells Fargo Check Card as well.

What mom wouldn't want to show off this adorable picture? If you haven’t checked it out, you should. Why shouldn’t your Wells Fargo card be as unique as you? You can show your school spirit by adding a photo of you and your friends decked out for the big game. Or use the feature to remind yourself of something you miss from back home.

It’s easy to upload a photo of you, your pet or your favorite sport — pretty much anything that interests you, but doesn’t go against image guidelines. There’s also an image library you can choose from if you don’t have a personal image handy.

Best of all, it’s a free service!

If you already have a Wells Fargo Credit Card or Check Card, sign on to Wells Fargo Online® Banking, click on the Account Services tab and select the “Access Card Design Studio” link to customize your card. If you don’t already have a card, you can explore your options at wellsfargo.com. Or if you’re just curious about the feature, view the demo Click here to learn about third-party website links to see how it works.

I tried using a Wikimedia creative commons (free-use!) image with this service, and it got rejected. What a waste of time.

  2. Karen Selby says:

    Hi Mike B,

I’m sorry to hear your experience using the Card Design Studio service was not a smooth one. Without knowing exactly what the image was, it’s hard to determine why it was declined. If the image looked like stock photography, we don’t know if it’s been purchased for common use or if it’s restricted, so to prevent litigation we err on the side of our image guidelines. Image guidelines can be found at: http://www.wellsfargo.com/help/faqs/carddesignstudio#Q7

    Thank you,
    Karen

  3. RT says:

I have tried 4 different times to use a painting my wife made and it has been rejected each time. I do not know how they determine what is trademarked and not but it is less user friendly I do not know how I can ever get across that this painting is in fact not trademarked or owned by anyone other than my family, but it was mildly disappointing that the only thing I can put on my card are things I find less than enjoyable.

  4. Karen Selby says:

    Dear RT,

I’m sorry to hear about your experience trying to add a picture of your wife’s painting to your card.

I’d like to talk more about your experience and see if there’s anything we can do to help.

Please contact me through the Ask the Expert link.

    Thank you,
    Karen

    • Brian says:

      Karen,

How can I get in touch with you? I have an approved design for my debit card but can’t get it approved. Thanks in advance.

  5. Juno says:

I am unable to start the design process using the design studio service.

After logging into my account and going into the design studio I am automatically logged out in about 5 seconds.
    I get this message:

“For security reasons, your session is no longer active.
For your protection, your session expires after several minutes of inactivity, and no information is stored in your computer’s memory.
If you were viewing your account information, please sign on again.
If you were filling out an application, please begin your application again.”

Very annoying. I would love to customize my cards, any advice?

    • Xavi says:

I had the same problem too Juno. I clicked on the Select a Design “clickable” and in a matter of 3 seconds I was automatically logged out.

      Yeah Juno, it’s really annoying.

      • Staci Schiller says:

Xavi, we don’t want your experience with the Card Design Studio Service to be annoying! Please contact us directly at 800-956-4442 so that our technical team can help troubleshoot the issue. Thanks!

  6. Jonathan says:

This “feature” is extremely irritating. I’m a professional graphic designer and photographer, and Wells Fargo keeps rejecting everything I submit to put on my card! It’s all MY work. I own the copyrights to everything I’ve submitted!

It’s not fair for Wells Fargo to only approve amateur, low-quality photos because they assume that anything that’s high-quality is stolen from somewhere.

    GRR.

    • Jonathan says:

I just wanted to update my comment: Since my original post, I was contacted by Karen who assisted me in getting my image approved. I just received my card in the mail with my custom design. Thanks! Great customer service.

  10. Catalina says:

How many days after I activate my card do I have to wait until i can customize it. The wait is killing me! I have the perfect picture chosen.

  11. Karen Selby says:

    Dear Catalina,

Please allow 30 days after you receive your new card before customizing it with a personal picture. If you are planning to use an image that contains original artwork, please send the image through the Ask the Expert link so we can determine if the image would meet card customization guidelines.

    Thank you,
    Karen

  12. Olimpia says:

I had a smooth experience with this feature in the end, however, I did have to resize my picture several times. My check card’s design gets so many compliments, I never use cash so I use it for everything :-P
I seldom use my credit card, but I love how it turned out too.

  13. john m says:

having a lot of those problems as well, i cant use any of my personal pictures, not vulgar or obscene it just keeps saying the size is too big when it is clearly within the guidelines on the upload page. anyone else know how to fix this? i tried resizing via online websites and still no luck. any info appreciated.

    • Karen Selby says:

      Dear John M,

I completely understand your frustration and I think I can help. Open your image using the software on your computer, mine happens to open automatically in Microsoft Office Picture Manager. Locate the resize image tool and select a dimension for your picture of at least 840 x 840. Usually I have to resize my image to about 180% (1040×842) before it is the right size to upload. The image might seem huge but it works when well you get to the point of uploading it to the Card Design Studio.

Please let us know if this works.

      Thank you,
      Karen

      • Anonymous says:

Thank you so much Karen! I used your dimensions and it has finally worked! I wish WF came out with a resizing app that’s part of the personalization. It can get so frustrating sometimes.

  14. john m says:

hey karen i got it to work FINALLY haha it was tough since ive got a Mac but im all squared away now. THANK YOU so much tho for your help

  15. Daniel says:

It keeps declining artwork I drew myself, there is nothing offensive about it either. Can someone please help me get my card approved =( ?

    • Barbara Raus says:

Hey Daniel — Shoot us an email with your contact information through Ask The Expert (link in the righthand sidebar) and we should be able to help.

  16. Cook says:

I keep putting my name down and then a little funny saying below it with an est. 1980 after it…just trying to be funny…the latest one was “straight up chillin’ est. 10980″–i dont see anything wrong with that, is there anyway to get that approved?

    • Barbara Raus says:

Cook – Will you send an email to us through Ask the Expert with an example of what you’re trying to get approved?

  17. Cook says:

I sent in an email last week but have received no reply. should i resend?

  18. Christopher Pineda says:

Hi I am trying to upload a picture of i love lucy with the cast but it always says that te picture is too big and I have tried resizing it and doesnt work at all.

  19. ralph says:

So is anyone actually in the rejections department for the card design studio, or does every design automatically get rejected now? Ive had 3 different designs rejected, including a picture of a unicorn, whose permission I obtained, as well as one of my face for the picture ID design!

I think it would also be helpful if there were a comment box so we could put information down about permissions.

  20. Karen Selby says:

    Hi Ralph,

I’m sorry you’ve been having trouble getting a photo added to your card. The Card Design Studio service does have people reviewing every image that comes through to see if it passes Wells Fargo criteria. Please send us (through the Ask The Expert link on the side of the page) a copy of the photo you would like to have on your card, let us know if this is on your Wells Fargo debit card or credit card and your contact information and we’ll work with you to help.

    Thank you,
    Karen

  21. Carlee says:

I recently designed my wells fargo card and it got rejected. I put a picture of Bob Marley. I don’t see why we can’t put pictures of celebrities. How can I own the image? Help please.

  22. Dria says:

Hi, I am Wells Fargo customer, my image was rejected too. I am an animation major at a University. I draw and create my own work. It belongs all to me. I really was excited about adding my image to my Debit card and it was rejected. I hope Ask the Expert will allow me to put my own artwork on my card :*(

    • Barbara Raus Barbara says:

Dria — We got your message and I wanted to let you know that I’m talking with some folks about your situation. You should be hearing from us through email soon.

  23. Leo says:

i did this after the banks switched from wachovia to wells fargo..it was pretty cool..put a pic of my truck on their and it got approved..just waiting for it to get here. EXCITED!

  24. Nikolaus says:

I used the Ask The Expert link a week ago, and sent an email with some questions about a custom card design but I never received a response. Is the Ask The Expert service still available? Has anyone received my email?

    • Barbara Raus Barbara says:

Hi Nikolaus – We did get a response sent back to you last week. Sorry for the delay we needed to connect with the card design folks to answer your question. Let us know if there is anything else we can do for you. Thanks!

  25. Ashley says:

I am trying to customize my wells Fargo debit card on my iPhone and I get to the page where it says customize or use a pic and after that I get nothing. Can I not use this design your card feature from my phone

  26. Johana says:

Im having the same trouble as juno as soon as i try customizing my card 3seconds after it takes me right off saying for your protection your session has expired i try doinh it over and over again and its not letting me plzzz help

  27. Quash says:

I own my own company. I own the rights to everything, and designed everything, from the Logo, advertisments to the Website myself.

I sent in the design on the 8th. Got a rejection Letter today (the 12th.) Promptly called Wells Fargo, and after 3 agents some one had me set up a Claim.

Was this the proper channel, or did I need to email ask the expert as well?

    • Barbara Raus Barbara says:

@Quash – I’m sorry you’ve been having troubles with the Card Design Studio® service! We’re looking into your situation. To double check would you send your contact information through Ask the Expert? You took the right steps–we just want to confirm that your situation is being addressed.

  28. loren says:

whenever i try to open the design studio, it times out and logs me off. i would really like to be able to customize my card… can anyone help me resolve this issue? is there any way around this?

  29. Quash says:

Just wanted to say thanks to Barbara for streamlining things. I got my card last Thursday (June 2nd) I’ll try to stay away from ATM’s to prevent my card from splitting, but should it happen again, will I need to submit the logo again? Or can I simply renew?

Again, thanks alot for helping my logo pass through easily. Being a wells Fargo Customer since 98, One thing that has always been the same is TOP NOTCH customer service

    • Barbara Raus Barbara says:

Glad to hear everything was resolved, Quash. Now that you’re image is on your account it will be available for you should you need to request a new card.

  30. Jackie says:

Same here have tried several times to design my card and it keeps loggin out in seconds -_____-’

  31. James says:

I uploaded a picture of my own website’s logo for my wells fargo debit card and that got rejected. I called wells fargo support and they said there isn’t a process to get it approved. This is foolish.

  32. John says:

I am experiencing the same issue as James. My own website, my own photo. It’s a door with my company logo on on my business credit card… Rejected. Very frustrating. I called and asked a representative, “Why?” I then listened to hold music for 12 minutes and disconnected. Makes me want to squish a “T” between that “WF” logo :-/

  33. Cody Raffensperger says:

I am also having the same problem with artwork that I created myself in Photoshop. After coming on here, I saw that I needed to send a message to support to get the problem resolved, which I did. The customer service rep (Ayyub), just told me where to go to see that it had been declined, without offering any sort of assistance. I’m seriously disappointed in this system.

  34. Travis says:

I too have had numerous problems with my card design. My first image was a picture of me and it got rejected. I guess due to the “sin” of drinking alcohol in the picture. Who decides if something is alcohol abuse as opposed to use? Anyway that’s not the big issue. The second image I submitted was from a free use website and it got rejected. I called and was told to submit it again. When I did it again, got rejected.
I have now submitted a third image for the 4th time and this is a drawing that a friend of mine did for me to use. Totally not copyrighted. This is the most inconvenient “feature” I have ever tried to use.

  35. nate says:

Same problem as Juno/Johana. I would rather not call and troubleshoot, just know if they had their problems fixed, and how.

  36. Lucero says:

i have tried to use this service a couple times i also keep getting the following message immediately after i click choose photo

“For security reasons, your session is no longer active.
For your protection, your session expires after several minutes of inactivity, and no information is stored in your computer’s memory.
If you were viewing your account information, please sign on again.
If you were filling out an application, please begin your application again.

    • Dana says:

Hey Lucero – Sounds as though you may be experiencing some issues. If you need help with our online process, can you call us at 800-658-3567?

  37. iliana says:

hello! I have tried to design my card a couple of times and as soon as I click the option “design my card” it sign me off nd I get this message:

“For security reasons, your session is no longer active.
For your protection, your session expires after several minutes of inactivity, and no information is stored in your computer’s memory.
If you were viewing your account information, please sign on again.
If you were filling out an application, please begin your application again.

I need to add any tool or plugins… Idk please help me

    • Dinna Martinez Dinna says:

      Hello Iliana –
You don’t need any special plug ins….Card Design Studio has an online time limit that is meant to protect the security of your online banking session so you are getting timed out for that reason.
What’s worked for me is to select and edit my picture before I get started on Custom Design Studio so my image is ready to upload and I don’t get timed out.
Give that a try and let me know how it goes!

  38. Davis Schmidt says:

I submitted a photo to put on a card, which was rejected and I now know that it IS against one of your guidelines, but I would like to speak with someone about why this particular guideline is in place. The photo I submitted was not obscene, nor was it vulgar in any way and the image is very commonly portrayed nearly everywhere. If someone can get back to me I’d appreciate it.

    • Dinna Martinez Dinna says:

Hi Davis, thanks for trying card design studio. The typical reasons for not being approved are because the user does not own or have permission to use the image; the main subject of the image includes a trademark, advertising, or branding; or the image includes public figures. It sounds like you’ve taken a look at our image guidelines in our FAQs. We encourage you to create another design with a different image.

  39. Kris says:

I submitted a design that I drew myself of a Police Box in Microsoft Paint; I drew the side of it, meaning only the panels and windows, and it was soundly rejected. I didn’t put any text or anything else in the image, so why the heck was THAT rejected?

    • Dana says:

Hi Kris, thanks for submitting a design in our app. I’m sorry you’re having a problem and would like to help you get it resolved. Please email us the details, including a copy of your image, at socialwebteam@wellsfargo.com and we’ll take a look. All card designs must meet our image guidelines as described in our FAQ. Thank you.

  40. Jade says:

So I created my own image and it was rejected. In a sense I can kind of understand why–it was directly inspired by a Ouija board (which I suppose can be construed as a death-related image or to an extent a religious symbol). But the thing is, despite it having a Ouija board layout, it was a hand-drawn jack-o-lantern in the center, the top heading said “Halloween”, and the letters just spelled out the alphabet. I personally don’t see how one can consider that offensive or harmful, and it was also my own work. Any ideas?

    • Dana says:

Hi Jade, thanks for trying card design studio. The typical reasons for not being approved are because the user does not own or have permission to use the image; the mail subject of the image includes a trademark, advertising, or branding; or the image includes public figures. It sounds like you’ve taken a look at our image guidelines in our FAQs. We encourage you to create another design with a different image.

  41. Allan says:

Same Problem here. I am a graphic designer, ive made my own art, and it keeps getting rejected. it follows ALL the guidelines. worse off, i cant get ahold of anyone to help me!

  42. jesus says:

i tried to put an image of my saxophone that i took and they denied me. what’s so wrong with a saxophone? this is really upsetting.
is there still someone that could help me?

  43. LeAnna says:

I have gone on to card design studio and everytime I do after I click to upload a photo I get this message “For security reasons, your session is no longer active.
For your protection, your session expires after several minutes of inactivity, and no information is stored in your computer’s memory.
If you were viewing your account information, please sign on again.
If you were filling out an application, please begin your application again.”

I would love to customize my card and would love for this to be fixed.

  44. Allan says:

Im also a professional photographer/graphic artist/musician and the two images ive submitted have been declined although I own the copyrights. Anyway to resolve? I click the ask a expert link but none of the subject ive given to choose seem to apply to my situation.

  45. Kyle says:

Can I not get my college team’s logo on my card? I just think this is bogus. My friend banks with Regions, and she has the Ole Miss logo on her card. I’m so jealous.
